Wild Bird Feeding Guide

If you are not sure on what type of feed to use for your wild birds dont worry, we have compiled a list for you. If we have missed your favourite let us know and we will add it on.

RobinRobin

Robins are not fussy eaters, the Mixed Bird Seed is an easy choice as they will eat most of the seed types it contains. Other options are Sunflower Seeds/Hearts, Nyger Seed, Fat Balls and Suet Cakes/Pellets especially ones with fruit and insects. The favourite though is Mealworm!

 

Blue TitBlue Tit

Blue Tits feed mainly on insects so Mealworm and the various Suet Cakes & Pellets with insects are a good choice, the fruit or berry varieties are also a good choice though. They will also happily eat Peanuts, Sunflower Seeds/Hearts and Nyger Seed.

 

Great TitGreat Tit

As with the Blue Tits, Great Tits also feed mainly on insects so Mealworm and the various Suet Cakes & Pellets with insects are a good choice, the fruit or berry varieties are also a good choice though. They will also happily eat Peanuts, Sunflower Seeds/Hearts and Nyger Seed.

 

Coal TitCoal Tit

Coal Tits like many of the feeds but prefer to take Sunflower Seeds/Hearts and Nyger Seed and stash it for later. They will also eat Suet Cakes/Pellets and Peanuts.

 

Long Tailed TitLong Tailed Tit

Long Tailed Tits natural diet is insects so Mealworm and Insect filled Suet Cake/Pellets are a prime choice but they will also eat Peanuts.

 

 

House SparrowHouse Sparrow

House Sparrows will eat just about anything you put out for them, Mixed Seed is the easiest choice but they will also eat Sunflower Seeds/Hearts, Peanuts, Suet Cake/Pellets, Fat Balls and Mealworm.

 

WrenWren

Wrens are ground feeders so they will mainly take seed dropped from your hanging feeder unless you have a ground feeder. Mealworm and Nyger Seed are the best options here.

 

ChaffinchChaffinch

The Chaffinch will mainly feed on various types of seed from the ground or hanging feeders so Mixed Seed, Sunflower Seed/Hearts and Nyger Seed are best.

 

BullfinchBullfinch

Bullfinches natural feed is insects & berries so Suet Cake/Pellets with fruit or insects are a good choice. They will also eat Sunflower Seed/Hearts from hanging feeders.

 

GreenfinchGreenfinch

The Greenfinch mainly eats various seeds meaning Mixed Seed, Sunflower Seed/Hearts are a good choice but with they mixed seed they will pick out what they want and throw the rest on the floor. They will also eat Peanuts.

 

GoldfinchGoldfinch

Goldfinches will mainly feed on Nyger Seed in the garden but will also eat Sunflower Hearts as an alternative.

 

SiskinSiskin

The Siskin will eat a variety seeds but most popular will be Sunflower Seeds/Hearts. Suet Cakes/Pellets, Nyger Seed and Peanuts are also good choices.

 

DunnockDunnock

Dunnocks are ground feeders and will eat the spilled feed off the floor that other birds have dropped, with that said they are not fussy eaters and will eat Peanuts, Suet Cake/Pellets, Fat Balls, smaller seeds from the Mixed Seed, Nyger Seed and Mealworm.

 

BlackbirdBlackbird

The Blackbird is another bird that will eat the fallen food on the ground that other birds have dropped or thrown from the table. Their main choice will be fruit and insect Suet Cakes/Pellets, Fat Balls,  Mealworm and Sunflower Seeds/Hearts.

 

BramblingBrambling

Bramblings natural diet consists of insects and berries and seeds so Suet Cakes/Pellets & Fat Balls are a good choice or Sunflower Seeds/Hearts.

 

Great Spotted WoodpeckerGreat_Spotted_woodpecker

Although Woodpeckers are well known for getting their food from bore holes they make in trees they have also been known to eat from Peanut & Suet Cake/Pellet feeders

 

 

NuthatchNuthatch

Nuthatches feed on nuts and insects making Peanuts a great choice aswell as fruit & berry containing Suet Cakes/Pellets.

 

 

StarlingStarling

Starlings are easy to feed as they will eat everything on our list of bird food so Mixed Seed, Sunflower Seed/Hearts, Nyger Seed, Peanuts, Fat Balls, Suet Cakes/Pellets & Mealworms are all great options.

 

Collared DoveCollared Dove

Collared Doves are another bird that feeds from the ground but are often found trying to ballance on tables and feeders. They will mainly eat smaller seeds from Mixed Seed and Fat Balls.

 

Song ThrushSong Thrush

A Song Thrushes natural diet mainly consists of worms, insects and berries, so any Suet Cakes/Pellets with these will be good aswell as Mealworm. They will also eat small seeds such as Nyger Seed.
